Rain or Shine: Volunteers Caring for Local Trails Amid Federal Uncertainty

What an incredible turnout this weekend!

Volunteers with Skagit Trail Builders completed rock work on 10 culverts, walked miles and miles to deliver rock sand for trail capping, and completed much needed restoration work at Northern State Recreation Area on March 8, 2025.

While our local trail system isn’t directly impacted by the recent federal layoffs, we’re feeling the ripple effects throughout our trail community. Many of our partners and mentors in the Forest Service and State/National Parks are facing job uncertainty. Funding for local recreation and conservation groups is on the line. We will be seeing the impacts soon – closed campgrounds and restrooms, overflowing trash cans, tree fall and overgrowth on the trails that keep our minds, bodies, and spirits healthy.

Seeing 30+ volunteers show up in the rain reminds us that our collective commitment to these spaces remains unshakable. Trails connect us—not just to nature, but to each other. We’ll continue to support our federal land manager friends while doing what we do best: caring for the trails we love in our local community.

There are lots of ways for you to support trails in your community:
⚒️  Join volunteer trail maintenance events hosted by local organizations
⚒️  Participate in trail adoption programs
⚒️  Organize a community clean-up for heavily used trails
💰  Donate to trail associations and conservation groups that maintain public pathways
📫   Contact elected officials and tell them why supporting trail funding is important to you!
