Trail Update: Blackberry control and trail progress with the Mountaineers!

On Saturday, April 27, twenty-three (23) volunteers from the Mountaineers GoHike Course joined our crew of local volunteers, bringing our team total up to 50. That’s our biggest turn-out yet!

The Hill Creek Trail Loop is nearing completion. Our contractor roughed in the trail by removing turf, connecting the loop. Volunteers built up the surface with mineral soil. This will be followed by ballast rock and finishing sand to create a level, hard-packed, sustainable surface.

The Mountaineers concentrated their efforts in the Big Meadow. They removed blackberry roots and planted grass, careful to preserve the wildflowers that were planted last year. (The Lupines are sending up flower buds!)

The restoration team worked in the woods, filling a borrow pit and naturalizing trail side. (Trillium, Bleeding Heart, and Salmon Berries are in bloom!)

Robert wrestles with a particularly large and stubborn blackberry root!

Our next work party is scheduled for May 11, 2024. We’ve got a lot of restoration work to do – great work for kids and those who enjoy getting grubby with friends!

We’d love to have you join us in creating this amazing community asset.
