Trail Update: Thompson Pond…here we come!

We wrapped up our work on Quarry Trail,  Saturday, February 28 with final capping and trail side restoration.
On March 14, we’ll be crossing the road to start work on the Thompson Pond Loop Trail!

Our work at the pond will start just below the Historic Guard House, removing the layer of sod to create a level and solid foundation for the trail tread.

As the name suggests, the trail will loop around the pond, but includes 3 access points to other areas of the park: Northern State Rd, Thompson Rd, and the ADA Trail to the parking lot.

Located in the trees below the guard shack, where Brickyard Creek flows into the pond, Benefield Bridge has been completed by the City’s contractor, Art Tuftee, and a group of volunteers from Janicki in memory of their friend Will Benefield. It shares its design with the other bridges that have been built at Northern State Recreation Area; Song Sparrow Bridge, Pump House Bridge, and Dovetail Bridge.
The Thompson Pond Loop Trail will be a little more straightforward than our other trails so we anticipate finishing the loop in 4 work parties: March 14, March 28, April 11 and April 25. Our goal is to be finished before the Annual Fishing Derby May 2-3.
