Volunteer Work Party Plan

Today’s goal! Build the connection between Winfield Trail and South Knoll Trail. We’ll be crossing the lawn up to the rock wall/Brickyard Creek road crossing.

Guest Groups: Sedro-Woolley High School Earth Club and HKP Architects

8:45 am Sign-in at the trailhead: Please note the new parking area for volunteers is located on the gravel road behind Trevennen Hall. Directions can be found here.

9:00 am:

Introductions, explain today’s work, set-up teams, and safety talk.

Handout T-shirts and take a Group Photo

9:30-noon: trail work

12-1 pm: Lunch & Salmon Release with Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group Group at Thompson Bridge!

1-3 pm: trail work

3 pm: clean up and organize tools

4:15 pm: Work Party Planning Meeting (by invitation only)

Our objectives for the day (in order of priority):

  1. Remove layer of sod on identified trail routing
  2. Spread layer of ballast (1 ¼” rock chips, no fines)
  3. Spread and compact mineral soil
  4. Rebuild rock wall (located between Brickyard Creek and the road)
  5. Restore previous staging area at entrance to the lawn

Teams

Crew Leader/Roving lead: Paul

Restoration

  • Lead: Lynn
  • Number of volunteers: 3-6
  • Description: Cleaning up the previous staging area at the trail entrance to the lawn and prepping it for grass seed planting.

Ballast

  • Leads: Craig and Chloe
  • Number of volunteers: 5
  • Description: Working ahead of the mineral soil crew. Guide material delivery. Spread ballast on top of bared soil to create drainage space and build up the surface of the trail 1-2” above the level of the grass.

Mineral Soil

  • Leads: Jason and Amelia
  • Number of volunteers: 7
  • Description: Spread and level mineral soil on top of the ballast, creating a slight crown or slope for drainage. Compact.

Rock Wall (potentially)

  • Lead: Jerry
  • Number of volunteers: 8 or more
  • Description: Re-align the rock wall next to the road above Brickyard Creek to create a barrier between the road and trail site.

Power Carrier Drivers

  • Lead: Kip
  • Drivers: 2-3
  • Description: Carry ballast and mineral soil between staging area and trail.
