Trail Update: Breaking Ground on Winfield Trail!

Winfield Trail is taking shape! Thanks to Anna MacKinnon and Jim “JT” Taylor for photos and video of the action.

What a great start! On Saturday, September 27, seventeen amazing volunteers rolled up their sleeves and made impressive progress on the new Winfield Trail.

Together, we built a long rock retaining wall, cleared or covered exposed roots, and hand-shaped the trail’s surface to make it smooth and inviting. Using power carriers, we brought in mineral soil and spread it along the tread—an important step toward finishing this beautiful new path.

Next up: hardening key sections with rock, fine-tuning drainage, and compacting the surface before the final tread cap goes on.

We were thrilled to have Laura Schumacher from the Port of Skagit join us for the day! Laura shared the Port’s environmental guidelines and jumped right in alongside our crew.

We’re also deeply grateful for the ongoing support of Zach and Ross from the Port of Skagit. They’ve been fantastic partners; collaborative, knowledgeable about soils and equipment, and eager to expand their trail-building expertise.

Thanks to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and enthusiasm. The Winfield Trail is off to a strong start, and we can’t wait to see it take shape!

Next volunteer work party is October 11, 2025.
