2022-2023: Building the Elevated Segment of the Pumphouse Trail

When the Pumphouse Bridge was complete, we celebrated! Now we could cross the creek with power carriers and materials to build the first section of the Pumphouse Trail.

When we explored the trail routing in 2019, Hansen Creek had recently flooded, covering the lower meadow with heavy clay mud. Because it was such a beautiful area between the two creeks, we decided to keep the trail routing but elevate it above the flood zone.

The county’s contractor, Art Tuftee, did the initial clearing of blackberries and tall grass with a Kubota mini excavator; then our volunteers came through to handle the more detailed work.

We removed grass, dug out blackberry crowns, scraped mud, and created space for culverts. We laid landscape cloth and began building up the surface of the trail to about 18 inches.

While part of our volunteer team worked on the elevated trail, the rest of the crew was up ahead, prepping the next segment of the trail for rock walls and clearing blackberries from what would eventually become the wildflower meadow!

Notice how orange the light is in the last few photos? That’s because of wildfire smoke.
