North Knoll Trail is a 3/4 mile section that extends from the Song Sparrow Connector, past the North Knoll, to the wild flower meadow. It follows Hansen Creek’s east bank through mature cedar forest, passing pools of bright blooming skunk cabbage, salmon berry patches, and hanging gardens of moss and licorice fern.
Rough-in work on this segment of trail started in 2023. By the time we took a our holiday break, we had broken through the trees and started routing on the West Meadow Loop.
Volunteers spent several cold clear winter days (and plenty of rainy ones, too) digging blackberry crowns, cutting back briars, and building up the surface of the trail to shed water.
In the fall of 2024, we restored trail side with grass and wildflower plantings.
After a wet and snowy winter break that revealed how muddy the meadow could really get, we made additional improvements then finished with rock sand capping in the spring of 2025.

Skagit Trail Builders is a program of United General District 304.
The trails at Northern State Recreation Area are the result of our partnership with Skagit County Parks and Recreation, the Port of Skagit, the City of Sedro-Woolley, and our incredible community of volunteers!
