2019: Building Brickyard Creek Trail

When we started working on the Northern State Trail System in 2019, we were thrilled to accept the help of the 6 to 8 volunteers who showed up regularly. As the trail system has grown, so have our volunteer teams. At our June 28, 2025, work party, we had 56 volunteers participate, demonstrating that our community loves and supports trails!

We began 2019 by breaking ground on Hill Creek Trail (at the time, we called it the Pump House Trail; it was renamed in May 2025). When the permit window opened to build Dovetail Bridge over Hansen Creek, we shifted our focus to that project.

When the plan for Brickyard Creek was approved, we hustled to build this 1/4 mile connector before the winter holiday. It’s a good thing we did because just a few months later, our work was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brickyard Creek starts at the historic guard shack on Northern State Rd, where visitors first enter the SWIFT Center Campus. It winds through the woods on the south side of Brickyard Creek for about 1/4 mile, connecting to a service road and sidewalk behind the historic nurse’s dormitory, Trevannan Hall. The trail crosses over the road and follows the covered sidewalks in front of the historic hospital buildings, then descends the hill to Dovetail Bridge.

Brickyard Creek Trail is part of a larger system of trails proposed for development in 2026-2027 on property managed by the Port of Skagit.
