Skagit Trail Builders started working on the Northern State Trail System in 2019. After spending a few work parties breaking ground on the Pump House Trail (now renamed Hill Creek Trail), they built the Dovetail Bridge.
This bridge is an essential connector for the Northern State Trail System, linking SWIFT Center and the Historic Hospital Campus to Northern State Recreation Area. It crosses Hansen Creek, a major creek that flows from Lyman Hill to the Skagit River.
Hansen Creek is an important riparian waterway, home, and nursery to 5 species of salmon and Steelhead Trout. Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group has been working with agencies and community groups since the late 1990’s to restore salmon habitat along the creek.
Volunteers from Skagit Trail Builders worked in collaboration with Art Tuftee, a master trail builder contracted by the county.
Over the next 6 years, our team worked with Art to build two more bridges. The Pumphouse Bridge was built in 2022 and Song Sparrow Bridge was completed in 2025. All three bridges were constructed using the same design, adjusted for each site.

Next: Breaking Ground on Hill Creek Trail

Skagit Trail Builders is a program of United General District 304.
The trails at Northern State Recreation Area are the result of our partnership with Skagit County Parks and Recreation, the Port of Skagit, the City of Sedro-Woolley, and our incredible community of volunteers!
