Congratulations to our 2024-2025 Youth Leaders!
Sativia, Shylee, Alex, and past Youth Leader R.J., are graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School in just a few weeks. In September they begin a new life chapter. We thank them for their hard work and commitment to our volunteer organization and trail project. We’ve enjoyed working with them and they have shared what a valuable experience it was for them, too.
We are collecting applications for 2025-2026 youth leaders. We have 2 positions open.

Why Youth Leaders?
We believe that by encouraging young people to take on leadership roles, we expand our capacity, strengthen our culture of stewardship, and inspire the next generation of trail advocates and educators. Their energy, creativity, and commitment help ensure that our trails are valued, protected, and accessible for generations to come.
What is the commitment?
Youth Leaders are expected to attend at least 16 of our 18-20 volunteer work parties per build year, Sept-June. Our work day starts at 8am with early team set-up at the Port shop and ends at 4:15 after we clean-up and put tools away.
Youth Leaders should be prepared to spend time outside in all types of weather and perform physical activities such as walking to trailheads and work sites, using hand tools (e.g., shovels, rakes), and lifting materials weighing up to 30 pounds. We also encourage our Youth Leaders to train on power carrier equipment.
Youth Leaders are expected to participate in leadership activities, like greeting volunteers at sign-up and collecting minor waivers, performing the safety talk, and leading work party teams and activities.
Who is qualified to apply?
Any student attending High School or College in Skagit County, ages 15-21 (preferred). Students attending alternative or home school are also encouraged to apply.
What do Youth Leaders receive?
- A stipend of $450 is paid for the program year, Sept – June. ($225 paid out twice by check by our fiscal partner United General District 304, from the Skagit Trail Builders fund).
- A Skagit Trail Builders T-shirt and hoodie.
- A meal during the group dinner at the end of each work party.
- Networking and new friendships with our community of volunteers.
- Training and work experience for your resume.
- The potential for Letters of Recommendation for your college and scholarship applications.
- Assistance with work wear, if needed
