Video: Salmon Spawning in Hill Creek

Spawning Coho Salmon are visible from the Pump House Bridge and other high points along Hill Creek Trail.

A tip for salmon spotting: Watch for clear, shallow water with a gravel bottom. Stop and listen. (Have patience, it can take a few minutes). When you hear a rhythmic “splash splash splash” – that’s a salmon, nesting or working its way through a tough spot in the creek.

These creatures have made an incredible journey from the Pacific Ocean, up the Skagit River, past beaver dams, fallen trees, and other obstacles to get to Hill Creek. Here they spread and fertilize their eggs, then die, returning the nutrients of their bodies back to the creek.

Have respect for these incredible creatures. Keep dogs and yourselves out of the water.

Admire their journey, don’t disrupt it!
